How learning to appreciate quiet stillness within can bring about lasting balance.
For go-getters, physical challenges are the go-to. A morning run, a weights session, a Pilates class and even an ice bath. We track and measure our achievements on our wearables and apps. We go hard, and our activities are visible. If we’re not competing with others, we’re likely measuring our own performance against yesterday’s numbers.
These fitness practices can have immense benefits and deserve their well-earned reputation for contributing to a healthy body and mind, with dopamine ups guaranteed. Yet on the flip side, we may also be reinforcing a state of elevated adrenalin and cortisol and not encompass the softness and stillness that we need for a balanced life.
I encourage you to seek out balance, to lean in to more subtle, softer practices, especially if stress has become too familiar in your daily life.
If you’re finding it hard to unwind, to feel grounded, be in tune with your body and connected with every aspect of your life, you would do well to slow things down, to allow your body to soften and your mind to relax.
Real Strength Also Comes From Within
In societies that offer praise for high performance and productivity, we can underestimate the quiet and subtle, mistaking gentleness for weakness and quiet for ineffective.
I put to you that it’s time to reframe this thinking. Soft and gentle practices can have profound impact – there’s immense power in what appears unremarkable; in movement that is not visible to the naked eye.
Nature is doubtless the best teacher of subtle strength. Consider the slow, persistent growth of an ancient kauri, and the intricate interconnectedness of forest ecosystems.
Right now, as we move toward spring, we can all observe the quiet energy which powerfully transforms dormant winter gardens into vibrant life. This immense shift happens behind the scenes, seemingly subtle, yet utterly transformative.
As part of the natural world ourselves, we are not that different.
Finding Your Natural Balance
We’re familiar with the concept of work-life balance, though ironically, many of us spend years chasing it – running after equilibrium while it remains frustratingly elusive. Perhaps we pack our “life” as intensely as we do our work, or perhaps we are looking in the wrong place for this balance.
Yet the need for balance extends through every aspect of our existence. We need the yin and yang, summer and winter, day and night, action and resting. Just as nature moves through seasons of growth and dormancy, we too require rhythms of engagement and restoration.
In these quieter rest-based practices, immense shifts occur beneath the surface.
Deep Transformation
Our nervous system responds, biochemical changes take place, and our body and mind have a chance to relax. We experience a deeper connection with ourselves, and everyone else around us. In the softness, when we practice deep rest regularly, we discover calm, peace, and a more regulated approach to life.
This quiet transformation adds up to something remarkably powerful – a more balanced, positive and grounded outlook that ripples through everything we do. And what could be more impactful than that?
